Do I have to be a resident of Texas?
No you may apply for a non-resident license and meet the eligibility requirements.
Can I take the LTC class at DPS?
No, License to Carry training and qualification classes are only given by State of Texas certified instructors. As of 2017 the classroom portion can be taken online. See the TxDPS website for online options.
If I’m licensed in Texas can I still carry in another state?
Before traveling to another state check with that state on their requirements for concealed carry and to make sure they recognize your Texas license.
Will I need my own handgun prior to the LTC class?
If you don’t have one yet you don’t need to go out and buy one. You can try out a few of ours. Please check out the First Step Pistol Class if you are not proficient with a firearm.
Is there a minimum caliber requirement for the LTC shooting qualification?
No. You may shoot the 50 round qualification test with a .22 handgun if you’d like.
We have a group in Austin from out of town. Do you rent shotguns?
We don’t rent shotguns for your own personal use without me there with you. You are welcome to use one of mine during one of my instructional group classes. Looking for something to do while in town? Need a fun idea for a Team Building event? Special birthday coming up? How about an afternoon of sporting clays at Capitol City Clays or Copperhead Creek Shooting Club. What if I don’t have my own firearm?
Austin Hot Shots offers firearm rental (for use during instructional classes) in both pistol and shotgun. You will have a choice of one of the following for an additional fee plus ammunition fee.

What are the shooting qualifications needed to successfully pass the LTC course?
To successfully qualify, shooters must complete the following course with a minimum score of 70% (175 out of a possible 250)
- Stage 1: Twenty shots fired at 3 yards
- Five shots fired, 2 seconds allowed between shots
- Ten shots fired, 3 seconds allowed between shots
- Five shots fired in 10 seconds
- Stage 2: Twenty shots fired at 7 yards
- Five shots fired in 10 seconds
- Five shots fired in two stages:
- Two shots fired in 4 seconds
- Three shots fired in 6 seconds
- Five shots fired with 3 seconds allowed between shots
- Five shots fired in 15 seconds
- Stage 3: Ten shots fired at 15 yards
- Five shots fired in two stages:
- Two shots fired in 6 seconds
- Three shots fired in 9 seconds
- Five shots fired in 15 seconds
